Just make sure it’s well within the range of your existing Wi-Fi network. It’s worth noting that once the initial setup is complete you can move the Orbi RBS50Y to whichever location you desire, plug it in, and power it on. My issue with colorblindness was a particular problem at the end of the setup process, as a good connection is signaled by a blue light, but a magenta light signals connection failure, and I have severe difficulty telling these two colors apart. The automated process is pretty straightforward, and I had the system up and running within an hour. You can then choose to set up your network manually or use the automated tool. Next you need to connect to the Orbi RBS50Y network from your PC and create an admin account in a browser window that pops up automatically. You then release the button and wait for the light to turn solid blue. To change it to extender mode to work with other systems, you must power it on while holding the sync button and continue holding the sync button until the indicator light begins pulsing white and blue. The Orbi RBS50Y, by default, is set to Orbi mode so that it automatically connects to Netgear’s Orbi router. It never became overly hot during my time testing it, but this seems like a questionable design decision. This heatsink is where the Orbi RBS50Y attaches to the mounting bracket and comes into contact with the wall. A warning label indicates that this can become warm, and this is definitely the case. You can wall-mount the RBS50Y, but there's an issue with the location of the heat sink. The initial difficulties I had were that I found the labeling on the control panel to be mildly confusing, and the color-coded lights that the system uses to display its status are difficult for me to determine due to my colorblindness. However, if you are adding it on to a non-Orbi system then the setup process is a bit more complex. If you already own a Netgear Orbi router, setting up the Orbi RBS50Y is a breeze. I haven't tested the wifi speed internal to my network, but qualitatively it's super fast.Lifewire / Andy Zahn Setup process: A bit tricky The dead spot in my office is totally gone - I get close to 300 Mbps on internet speed tests. Now I've had it running for a week and it's great. I had to update it in 3 steps to make it work. When it finally let me connect, the problem was clear: it was several revisions out of date on firmware, so my router didn't communicate correctly with it. I finally did a factory reset, removed it from the router's config, and con nected via ethernet. I had to play with it a while before I figured out how to connect to the satellite directly - when it was working with the router and I connected via my browser, it would spin for a long time and refused to accept my password. ![]() So buying the satellite used seemed like a much better option.Īt first it worked ok, but was kind of flaky. I even thought about buying another router + satellite (which is often cheaper than an add-on satellite alone!) and toss the router, but that seemed too wasteful. ![]() ![]() Netgear charges a ridiculous amount for add-on satellites if you buy one new. The Netgear Orbi Outdoor Satellite RBS50Y makes it easy to extend your existing Orbi mesh network to the great outdoors, offering solid throughput performance at respectable distances. I have an Orbi router + satellite in my 1920s house with plaster & lath walls, so signal propagation was not great - especially in my home office. Great way to extend & strengthen existing Orbi network
